Suicide
The Suicide Alert feature is designed to identify individuals who may be at risk of suicide based on their interactions with Zo (AI). It helps connect at-risk individuals with appropriate support resources by directing them to emergency services or alerting the school counselor.
The system is inspired by the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), a widely used suicide risk assessment tool. It evaluates suicidal ideation and behaviors to help identify individuals at risk of suicide. The C-SSRS is commonly used in clinical and research settings, as well as by emergency responders, schools, and mental health professionals.
- Intensity 1 – The student has suicidal thoughts (ideation) but no plan.
- Intensity 2 – The student has a plan but no set date or time.
- Intensity 3 – The student has a plan and has set a date and/or time.
- School counselors – Notified through all channels and can view student details to provide immediate support.
- Principals – Notified through all channels but do not have access to student details. Instead, they are encouraged to consult the school counselor to provide the necessary support for the student.
The Suicide Alert feature is available to all students using the Zoala app. However, schools have the option to opt out of this feature if they choose.
You can view suicide alerts under the Alerts Tab of the Overview Dashboard or in the Triage Dashboard. These alerts provide context on students flagged for suicide risk. By clicking View Alerts, you can access detailed information to better understand and support the student.
This information enables counselors to better support students flagged for suicidal ideation. The context provided can be used during one-on-one counseling sessions with the student and also to keep staff informed while monitoring the student’s well-being.
Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale - DASS
The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS) is a self-report tool used to assess the severity of depression, anxiety, and stress. Zoala uses DASS 21-Y, a youth-focused version widely utilized in clinical and research settings for mental health assessment.
Students who complete the DASS 21-Y and score 4 or 5 on a 5-point scale receive an alert indicating whether they are experiencing depression, anxiety, or stress.
No, DASS alerts are only available via email and the school portal.
Only school counselors or trained professionals within the school have access to this information.
Bullying
Bullying details are recorded through the Wellness Survey, where students subjectively assess their experiences. They rate the severity on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the highest) and select the type of bullying they encountered.
Severe bullying – Triggered when a student reports bullying severity of 7/10 or higher in the Wellness Survey.
Moderate bullying – Triggered when a student reports bullying severity of 6/10 or lower in the Wellness Survey.
No, bullying alerts are only available via email and the school portal.
You can find detailed bullying context under the Alerts Tab of the Overview Dashboard, specifically in the Flagged Bullying Conversations section. Here, principals, counselors, and teachers can view different types of bullying reported by students. Additional contextual information, such as the source and the number of students affected, is available on the Profile Page.
Class teachers, school principals, school counselors, and other designated school staff can view bullying details and alerts.
